I grasp for the words
I almost catch them this time,
but they still eluded me.
My face turns red.
I’m black so maybe I turn maroon.
Maroon with frustration.
The lyrics come again
They are muddled,
but I can make it them partially.
The voices speak of imperialism and patriarchy
It sounds like something that
could be perceived as magical
but there is something off
Sounds like colonization
A hostile takeover!
I jump up with all my might to grab them again.
They weave out of the range of my grasp
I want them in my hands,
so, I can rearrange them.
Regain human identity as a whole
instead of the fragmented pieces of conquer driven rhetoric.
The condition of “whiteness” is indoctrinated in the lyrics.
A poison against the organic form of my skin
My immigrant status
To them I am
My skin, my face, my name, all have purpose
Humanity doesn’t come in levels
with parameters of demarcation
The lyrics start to come again
I crouch and hide in the darkness of their cave
I stay quiet. They can’t see me or hear me.
I say to the ruckus that echoes in my head
I jump up again!
They are mine now.
I didactically dismember the lyrics with my bare hands!
Ripping them to shreds
My actions are quick not violent
I add new meaning
They fight me
They don’t want to accept their new message
It is forced on them
They release their struggle
They re-establish their design
I release them back into the air
Their lyrics are inaudible at first
As they start to transmute
The words get clearer
They lyrics are earnest, wise, intelligent
I wonder how the others will interpret the new lyrics
The old ones were falsely agreeable
I could see how they can be satisfying.
The introduction of new lyrics is disruptive
Chaos is born.
As the new lyrics are received
There will be defiance and ignorance.
It is habitual.
With the subversive interruption that I have created
I hope to see a change in all songs.
The melody evolves and become inclusive of cultural diversity
racial permissiveness, gender blindness.
Eyes that were fused shut
What happens after the revolution starts?
